Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition that has a significant impact on patient quality of life in both males and females. However, it is still underdiagnosed and undertreated. Over the past few years there has been a significant increase in the number of antimuscarinic agents available for treating OAB. The Urology University CME Newsletter presents the similarities and differences between these agents, allowing for well informed decision-making about therapy approaches. Additionally, combined use of behavioral therapy and pharmacologic therapy improves therapeutic outcomes and should be discussed with all suitable patients with OAB. Proactive management of adverse effects and the setting of proper expectations may help improve adherence to therapy.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

Describe epidemiology of overactive bladder (OAB) and differentiate the prevalence of the disorder as compared with the number of people actually treated
Recognize OAB as an important medical condition that requires effective treatment, and as a condition that can have a significant impact on patient quality of life in both males and females
Screen for and diagnose OAB accurately in both male and female patients
Demonstrate an ability to integrate the various treatments available (i.e., behavioral, pharmacologic) into their clinical practice
Identify newer treatment options that minimize side effects that affect patient adherence to prescribed medications, a factor that could positively impact the population affected by OAB
